 Southern Fried Shrimp

Southern Fried Shrimp is the kind of comfort food that brings pure joy the moment it hits the skillet — golden, crispy, perfectly seasoned, and full of that coastal Southern magic. It’s the taste of summers by the water, backyard fish fries, and family gatherings where laughter fills the air. One bite and you get that warm, nostalgic feeling that only true Southern cooking can give.

Ingredients

1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup cornmeal

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon paprika

Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

In a bowl, combine buttermilk and hot sauce. Add the shrimp and let them soak for 10–15 minutes.

In another bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).

Remove shrimp from the buttermilk, letting excess drip off, and dredge in the flour–cornmeal mixture.

Press the coating on well so it sticks.

Fry the shrimp in batches for 2–3 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.

Serve hot with tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, or a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Enjoy that crunchy, flavorful Southern Fried Shrimp — perfect for parties, appetizers, or a quick comfort meal.
